Let The Mocking Begin

This decision came down to 2 people because I thought their picks were way to safe. The idea was to come up with something that is different. I did not want bands or songs that I could walk into FYI and see displayed in the What's Hot rack. So without further delay the LOSER is;

ALTER RONNIE

Lets take his picks one at a time.
1. Dave Mathews Band - They used to be a very creative and influential band back in the day. Now they re a band that just spews music to the hippie population because the Grateful Dead was not around. When they first came out, their music had a certain quality to it that was really cool. But over the years, nothing changed. It was just about how we can make Dave's vocals sound a little more muffled.

2. Audioslave - Again, great band, great vocals. They just piss me off because Chris Cornell let his huge ego get in the way and destroy the band. For that I feel it takes away from what they accomplished. Also the last CD was crap. You could tell this band was not continuing. Chris did an interview and when asked how the band was doing he said, what band? Its the Chris Cornell show people come to see. Winner.

3. Oasis - This one was tough. I actually thought of making Rock Rolla the looser because of this band. They have some really good songs and are big in Europe. But as I listened to more non popular songs, I noticed that they just didn't have it. So they are not as solid as I thought. Also the lead singer has a so - so voice even on a CD track. They too just rehash the same sound over and over. I also don't like how they copy the Beatles way to much.

As far as the rest of the ones you posted. Well I said 3 not 4 or more, so I had to discount them. Too bad, you had some great bands on that list. But there has to be a loser and sad to say you are it. You are better than this list shows. You have give me music to consider that was far better than the 3 you gave and that weighed in as well.

Congrats Alter Ronnie!!!

Here is a song from one of his selections though,

Two Step - Dave Matthews Band

Wait, what did he say? Spit the marbles out.

  1. I must agree that Dave Matthews keeps spewing out the same stuff. I also like the stuff from the beginning. However, he is incredibly talented...which only comes out when he sings live. Being a singer, I can say that what he can do with his voice is downright amazing! Yes, this means some blurring...but I think in some ways, he uses his voice like another instrument...one without words.

From my memory...I don't think Alter Ronnie said he liked this band. I think he was asking if you understood their popularity.

    My two cents:

I tried to go to their concert, but it sold out at one our major stadiums in SF in less than an hour!

I really can't listen to their CD in one sitting, but I saw a live show and they were electric. They respond to the audience and brings out the fun in everyone.

So there are a few solid songs and quite of few medium songs, but when you go to their concert...you have an amazing time. Perhaps this is the reason for their popularity?

Then there's "Crash"! I didn't know it was pornographic, until much later. Hope I didn't stumble people out there. Anyway, this very popular song may be an anthem of sorts. Perhaps people are attracted to this style of living? I can't be sure!

Anyway, I think that at present, they are no longer quite as popular. On the other hand, what do I know?

Great job, Jay. I don't agree with everything you said, but it's well written and interesting!

Can't wait till the next post! Oh, what will it be?

BTW--I thought you were going to review...song by song...or band by band...not person by person?

  2. I thought Phish had taken up the mantle of Ultimate Hippie Music for the current generation? My perception was that DMB (is that acronym a coincidence?) was more of a fratboy thing. I will never understand how they could possibly incite a riot at their shows. I guess fratboys just need any excuse. Props to their drummer for wearing hockey jerseys, though. Also, "Satellite" is one of the greatest songs of the 90s, in my opinion. But I wouldn't voluntarily listen to anything past their first album.

Audioslave seemed like a pretty ok band, though I never personally got into them. I will say that I liked Chris Cornell's Bond theme better than Jack White & Alicia Keys, but that's not much of a defense. Cornell sounds like a jerk.

I like Oasis quite a bit, but I only have their one big album, (What's the Story) Morning Glory. Their singles are usually very good but you're right about the deeper cuts, they tend to be more filler than anything else. Plus, the brothers Gallagher always seemed, especially at the height of the band's popularity, to overshadow their music by being crazy drunk rock stars.

I didn't realize we were all going to be singled out like this! I'll be hiding under my bed till this all blows over lol.

  4. Sorry Alter, but i was not inspired by the choices. I wish you had put some of the ones on the bottom in there, it would have been a differnt story. As said I like certain aspects about each band, but other picks had a better overall feel to them.

Let me add this, I totally respect Alter Ronnies opinion on music, he is quite knowledgable.

  5. I would just like to add that last night I was trying to by some new Chucks at the Foot Locker (for the record, they did not have my size in the color I wanted; just so you know) and let me first say that they play some terrible music in there. Apparently some female musician has recently covered Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus" and it was just dire. But after that there was another pop song and it turned out to be Chris Cornell! It was equally terrible, if not worse. It really sounded 100% like a pop song. That's pretty messed up if you leave a rocking band like Audioslave to do pansy-type pop songs.

Is it straight up EGO or just CA$H MONEY that have caused Cornell to go off the rails? Like usual, probably a combination of the two.
