And The Winner For Best Video Is.....

Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors - Editors

I have to admit, this was a tough one to call. It came down to this one, Royskopp - What else is there, and Outlandish - Look Into My Eyes. I think what pushed this over the edge for me was the little twist at the end of the video with the girl in the boat and how she escapes.

A little history. Editors are a British indie rock band based in Birmingham, who formed in 2002. Previously known as Pilot, The Pride and Snowfield, the band consists of Tom Smith (lead vocals, rhythm guitar, piano), Chris Urbanowicz (lead guitar and synth), Russell Leetch (bass guitar and live backing vocals) and Ed Lay (drums, percussion and live backing vocals).

Editors' own variation of dark indie guitar rock draws on influences from both older and contemporary bands. Their influences include Echo and the Bunnymen, Joy Division, The Strokes, The Walkmen, R.E.M. and Elbow. The band draw their musical style particularly from the latter two bands' debut albums Murmur and Asleep in the Back. While often compared to Joy Division and Echo and the Bunnymen by the media, the band have indicated that those bands are too old to have a major impact on their musical style. Upon Editors' first appearances in the British music scene, they were also heavily compared to American indie band Interpol; however both bands have strongly played down the associations. I also feel like they are a Coldplay, but with more talent and less feminine lead singer movements. (A little research for you, huh Ratio)

The song writing for this song is very strong and indepth. The really enjoy how the song flows musically. It is a rollercoaster effect. What I mean by that is like a rollercoaster it has sections of anticipation followed by moments of calm and then a huge build up and then the final drop that takes your breath away.

I am very pleased with this selection and give it 5 stars, 10 on a scale of 10, 3 bananas, whatever you use for a scale. I have been looking for a European band that sounds solid and writes good songs. I think I was finally tuned into one that just might fit that void.

  1. Ok... I don't get it. I hate REM and they remind me of REM. I like the "flow", it's nice.
The one thing I don't get is why you think the video is so good. I still don't get it. Ok she's in a mental hospital and breaks out to run all over the place... then she somehow walks on water? What in the name of all that's normal is that supposed to do with anything?
    You're weird.

  2. Ohhh... you just explained it to me... How stupid can a video be??? She's supposed to be like Jesus??? Oh, help me before I fall over with agony!

  3. I actually like the video. I think it's more symbolic, not really of Jesus, but of life!

In some ways, the world has become one huge mental hospital. People are suffering more and their mental state is not as stable. Yet society regulates people by telling them how to react or act. That means that anyone who doesn't follow the rules is labeled as "crazy" or a "nut job".

In this video, the girl represents people who refuse to be labeled and who finally find their way to freedom. Freedom away from people who are trying to make her fit the society's rule box.

In the end, when she escapes by walking on water, it represents the final push to freedom. That leaving the "the mental ward of society" sometimes requires a miracle.

Which I believe to be true. I know I don't fit in the proverbial box of society roles. I'm somewhat able to look only slightly out of the box, but inside I yearn for more freedom!

It's hard for me because I'm also sensitive to people's feelings and I don't want them to feel uncomfortable! Therefore, depending on the company, I can be more "normal" or more free.

I wish I could be like that girl and somehow find the ability to be free all the time!

Anyway...love the video and the song is good too! Bravo to the person who picked it!

So...Jason...some of the writing sounded like someone else? Are you secretly hiding another personality ;-)?

  5. I love the video.

    Run from the institution!

I like how the water helped her escape in the beginning. Then throughout her escape she was helped out by the outcasts of society... a stray dog, a woman from the streets, etc. Then, at the end, water comes to the rescue again. Great video!

The song, however, is okay. I do see how it sounds similar to REM and Coldplay, but I think REM and Coldplay do it better.

As for the "feminine lead singer movements", I'm not sure what you mean by feminine, but the two of them seem to move the same way... tilt face upwards and stare into space... flare hands out in slow motion...

I agree with Beatriz... paragraph #2 and 3, except for the last two sentences, sure doesn't sound like you... hmmm...

  6. I did a lot of research on them. So I had plenty of material to draw from. When you write about Kelly Clarkson you don't need prolific words or deep thoughts.
    Also I bought a thesaurus.

  7. I watched the video a second time. is that Simeon Cowell on drums? is that girl a star wars Jawa? the singer needs some dental work and the prostitute looks like she's been hit in the face too many times. the song did sound better the second time!

  8. These guys and Interpol all take flack for sounding like Joy Division ripoff bands, but I think Joy Division was pretty awesome and I personally feel that there should be more Joy Division ripoff bands.

I was never heavily into this video, but I like the drums and the crescendos and such. The end is a bit Coldplay-ish, but I hadn't thought of that until it was suggested above, probably because I don't listen to a whole lot of Coldplay and mostly associate them with piano-driven laser light shows.

Also, Alter Ronnie, they're British, most of them need some dental work. Unlike the US, looking perfect is not a prerequisite for musical skill in the UK.

Good job all around, Mr. Conrad. Keep up the good work!
